The reception of streaming media over
the Internet today is prone to distracting
interruptions, is nowhere near TV quality, and is
expensive to deliver. No one can make a solid business
case for mass Video on Demand/streaming over the public
Internet until these problems are solved. The
fundamental limitations to the delivery of rich media on
the Internet are inherent to infrastructure related
issues - network latencies and congestion. Over the
years, a number of companies have attempted to address
these challenges through compression algorithms, edge
networks, caching servers, network monitoring software,
download and play services, peer-to-peer networks,
bursting technologies, IP protocols, and other
approaches, but cost effective, consistently reliable
broadcast quality video delivery remained unachievable. |
